Born in 1898 in Guadix, Andalusia, Ismaël de la Serna trained at the School of Fine Arts in Granada, where he developed his early artistic explorations. It was in this environment, surrounded by the landscapes and light of his native region, that he laid the foundations of his artistic language. This drawing, depicting an Andalusian landscape, bears witness to this early period of his life and reveals a particularly expressive early style, in which spontaneous brushwork captures a striking atmosphere.
In 1921, Ismael De la Serna moved to Paris, where he became part of the vibrant avant-garde scene and engaged with Cubist and Surrealist movements. His work then evolved towards a more synthetic construction of forms, whilst retaining the freedom of expression he had inherited from his early years.
