Louis Goyet est un autre exemple de peintre ouvrier. Vivant dans la banlieue lyonnaise à Villeurbanne, Goyet travaillait de nuit à l’O.T.L. (Omnibus et Tramways de Lyon), affecté à l’entretien des voies. S’il semble avoir suivi quelques cours de dessins, on sait qu’il était proche du génial Maurice Ferréol dont sa peinture adopte parfois les coloris.
Les tableaux de Goyet sont extraordinaires par leur solide et fière présence. Etranger à toute idée de séduction, le peintre choisit ses sujets dans son quotidien. Autoportraits, intérieurs quiets et paisibles, épouse occupée aux tâches ménagères, enfants aux jeux humbles, tout son univers exprime un bonheur simple et assumé, la joie des beaux dimanches. En contrepoint, une certaine facétie à tendance anarchiste, illumine quelques compositions où l’humour se mêle à un sens de l’observation aiguisé et à des prises de positions bien engagées. Bien plus qu’un simple naïf, Goyet témoigne d’une conscience aiguë et vériste de son monde, qu’il nous partage admirablement par sa peinture.
Louis Goyet is another example of a working-class painter. Living in Villeurbanne, on the outskirts of Lyon, Goyet worked night shifts at the O.T.L. (Omnibus et Tramways de Lyon), where he was assigned to track maintenance. Although he appears to have taken a few drawing lessons, we know that he was close to the brilliant Maurice Ferréol, whose colour palette his paintings sometimes adopt.
Goyet’s paintings are extraordinary for their solid and proud presence. Unconcerned with any notion of seduction, the painter chose his subjects from his daily life. Self-portraits, quiet and peaceful interiors, a wife busy with household chores, children engaged in simple games—his entire world expresses a simple, unpretentious happiness, the joy of fine Sundays. In contrast, a certain anarchic wit illuminates some of his compositions, where humour blends with a keen sense of observation and strongly committed stances. Far more than a mere naïve artist, Goyet demonstrates a keen and realistic awareness of his world, which he shares with us admirably through his painting.
