Mel Klapholz
Mel Klapholz né en 1928 à East Orange dans le New Jersey aux Etats-Unis. Après des études à la Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art et à l’Art Students League de New York, où il rencontre notamment George Grosz, l’artiste entreprend une carrière dans la publicité et le graphisme entre New York, Boston et Chicago. Voyageur, il découvre le Mexique et s’établit un temps à Cornwall en Angleterre, avant de s’installer définitivement dans le sud ouest de la France en 1979. Abandonnant l’illustration, l’artiste se consacre pleinement à la peinture et expose à partir de 1980 à la Galerie Protée à Toulouse.
De 1972 à 1983, son oeuvre est uniquement composé de grands paysages contemplatifs. D’après des croquis exécutés sur le motif, l’artiste représente un monde quasiment abstrait, où la lumière et les éléments deviennent sujets. Merveilleusement synthétique, l’artiste épure les formes pour atteindre l’essentiel.
Le Musée des Augustins de Toulouse lui consacre une belle rétrospective en 1989. L’artiste vit aujourd'hui dans un village du Gers, où il continue à peindre.

Mel Klapholz was born in 1928 in East Orange, New Jersey, in the United States. After studying at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art and the Art Students League of New York—where he met George Grosz, among others—the artist embarked on a career in advertising and graphic design, working in New York, Boston, and Chicago. A traveler, he discovered Mexico and settled for a time in Cornwall, England, before moving permanently to southwestern France in 1979. Abandoning illustration, the artist devoted himself entirely to painting and began exhibiting in 1980 at the Galerie Protée in Toulouse.
From 1972 to 1983, his work consisted solely of large, contemplative landscapes. Based on sketches made from life, the artist depicts an almost abstract world, where light and the elements become the subjects. With marvelous synthesis, the artist distills forms to capture their essence.
The Musée des Augustins in Toulouse dedicated a major retrospective to him in 1989. The artist now lives in a village in the Gers region, where he continues to paint.
